What it is
Chalk Art is a drawing game that looks and feels like real chalk. Pick a stick from the chalk tin and draw on a classroom blackboard or on grey playground tarmac: lines come out grainy and dusty, the surface shows through, and a scratchy chalk sound follows your finger. There is rainbow chalk that changes color as you draw, glow chalk that shines on the blackboard and sparkle chalk that leaves twinkles behind. When the picture is finished, take a photo of it for the gallery, or clean it away: a felt duster wipes the blackboard and a rain shower washes the playground clean. For children learning to write, a tracing mode shows dotted shapes, letters and numbers to draw over, with a start dot that shows where each line begins.
How to play
- On a laptop or desktop: Pick a chalk and draw with the mouse. Number keys pick a chalk, E rubs out, Z undoes the last line.
- On a tablet or phone: Pick a chalk from the tin and draw with your finger. Two children can draw at the same time on a tablet.
What children learn
- Fine motor control and hand–eye coordination
- Letter and number formation, with stroke order shown by the start dot
- Shapes: circle, square, triangle, star and more
- Color, creativity and making choices
Tips for parents
Ask your child to tell you about the drawing rather than guessing what it is. For tracing, let them pick the letters of their own name first. The camera saves the drawing on this device only, so it is easy to look back at last week's pictures together.
Questions parents ask
- Where are saved drawings kept?
- Only on your device, in the browser. Nothing is uploaded. From the gallery you can share a drawing as a picture or save it to your photos.
- Can my child learn to write letters with it?
- Yes. The tracing mode has every letter from A to Z and the numbers 0 to 9. A green dot shows where to start each line, and the letter celebrates when it is traced.
- What happens if we clean it by mistake?
- Press undo and the drawing comes back, even after the rain or the duster.
